Winter tyres ensure your safety

When choosing winter tyres, ask yourself these three questions: Where do I drive? How often do I drive? How experienced am I? Don’t rush into choosing the winners of tyre tests announced in popular car magazines because our climate is not the same as in Northern Finland, Northern Sweden or Northern Russia.

A good studded tyre has perfect traction on icy surfaces both when braking and making a turn. Whatever the manoeuvre, a studded tyre does its job. It is the perfect choice for the Lithuanian climate.

One of the advantages of a studded tyre is slower wear; however, many users complain about distressing noise created by studded tyres. It should be noted that after 1,000–2,000 kilometres the studs will “sit” at their place and create less noise.

Why can the choice made based on the test results published in car magazines be wrong? Many people buy tyres based on what they have read in magazines or websites, and the general assumption is that a tyre with higher ranking is automatically one of the best in the world. We have tested many tyres in the Lithuanian climate and know that it is not that simple. Majority of tests have been carried out in places that differ significantly from the conditions in Lithuania. When was the last time we had freezing cold winter that lasted long? Whereas the problem with noise pointed out in tests cannot be associated with our climate at all because at temperatures as low as -30°C it is totally quiet outside as the noise is muted. Naturally, the noise created by tyres inside the car is louder than under normal circumstances. We at Rehvid Pluss are convinced that you shouldn’t always choose the winner of a test. Instead, consult our specialists who know which tyre is the most suitable for you.

There is a common perception that studded tyres cause damage to asphalt, which happens to be true. However, choosing a tyre with fewer studs will ease this problem significantly. Security is the priority. Studded tyres will bring your car to a safe stop even in extreme winter conditions. Modern studded tyres are designed for ABS brakes and function perfectly even with fewer studs.

We also recommend planning your purchase before the season begins. This way you will have more time to make a decision and to receive your tyres on time.

How do the braking distances of winter tyres differ?
Most drivers have never been able to compare different types of tyres in equivalent conditions, so it can be difficult to understand how differently tyres actually perform in slippery conditions. Several recent ABS braking tests show that the difference between a quality premium tyre and a cheap one using outdated technologies can be more than half.

The tests also clearly show that even a cheap studded tyre is significantly more effective than a all-season tyre in icy conditions. Therefore, in the case of budgetary challenges, one should rather prefer a cheaper studded tyre as a winter tyre than a mediocre all-season tyre, and when deciding in favor of a all-season tyre, aim for the best possible quality models.

The difference is even greater when using Central European tyres unsuitable for the local climate in slippery conditions, which can increase braking distances by more than half in difficult conditions compared to the best premium manufacturers in their class. Therefore, for the sake of your own safety and the safety of others, it is always worth choosing the high-quality tyres offered in our e-shop and using the tyres that the season requires.

What to pay attention to when choosing a winter tyre?
The basic parameters of winter tyres are the quality of the lamellae (also studs on studded tyres), tread depth and tyre compound. Unlike harder summer tyres, winter tyres for driving in the cold are made of a softer rubber compound that does not become too stiff in sub-zero temperatures.

It is also worth noting that the pattern of winter tyres is different from the one used for summer tyres, since water drainage is much more important in winter with snow and ice than in summer.

The lamellae, or "plates" of the winter tyre pattern, help keep the wheels in contact with the ground in snowy conditions in winter, while the studs in the studded tyres are designed to ensure controllability when driving on completely bare ice.

When choosing the right tyres for your car, you should therefore take into account your driving habits (either in the city, on the highway, in rural areas), your driving style and, of course, your budget. At "Padangos24", we are happy to help you make a choice and always recommend the tyres that best suit the driving habits of a particular driver.
